Why Great Service Beats Any Closing Gift

Should You Expect a Closing Gift From Your Real Estate Agent

One of my readers recently emailed me with a question about a closing gift. They had just closed on a home and were surprised that their real estate agent did not give them a gift. The reason they asked was because they had been following several agents on social media who often post photos of extravagant closing gifts for their clients. They began to wonder if they had done something wrong or if their agent had simply forgotten.

This is an interesting question and one worth exploring.

Why Closing Gifts Are Not Guaranteed

Over the years, I rarely gave gifts at closing unless I found something very specific and personal that I thought a client would truly appreciate. I never wanted to give something generic like flowers, candy, or a gift card to a store they might never use. For me, it was about the relationship. If I got to know the client well and something thoughtful came to mind, then I would give a gift.

More importantly, I always considered myself a professional, similar to accountants, attorneys, or HVAC contractors. Think about it. Does your accountant give you a gift after filing your taxes? Does your attorney present you with a gift after resolving a case? Does your furnace technician bring you a bottle of wine after repairing your furnace? The answer is no. What they provide is professional service, and that is exactly what a real estate agent provides as well.

The Champagne Story

I once attended a closing years ago that perfectly illustrates how tricky gifts can be. I was representing the seller, and the buyer’s agent brought a beautifully wrapped bottle of champagne for their clients. After the paperwork was finished, the agent proudly presented the gift. The buyers sat uncomfortably for a moment before thanking the agent and admitting they did not drink. They politely declined the champagne.

Trying to recover, the buyer’s agent offered the champagne to my sellers, saying thank you for being so cooperative throughout the transaction. My clients then explained that they also did not drink. The room became awkward as the agent fumbled for what to do. Finally, they turned to me and asked if I would take it. I accepted and thanked them, but the entire moment left everyone a little uncomfortable.

The agent had good intentions, but because they did not know their clients well enough, the gift missed the mark.

The Real Gift

At the end of the day, the real gift you should expect from your agent is excellent service. A good agent should guide you through one of the biggest financial and emotional transactions of your life. That means being responsive, knowledgeable, and supportive throughout the process. Yes, agents are compensated for their work, and that is how it should be. Their service is what matters most, not whether or not you receive something tangible at closing.

Final Thought

If you receive a closing gift, appreciate it. But do not expect one. What you should truly value is the service, advice, and commitment your agent provides. That is what matters most in a successful real estate transaction.

If you are preparing to buy or sell a home and want guidance from a professional who puts service above everything else, I am happy to share advice or connect you with a trusted real estate agent in your area.
