The Truth About Working With Real Estate Agents

Are Real Estate Agents Really Useless? The Truth Behind the Reputation

A friend recently mentioned a post he saw online claiming that real estate agents are useless. The discussion around it was intense, with some people even suggesting that artificial intelligence programs could replace agents in the home buying or selling process. This is not the first time I have heard such comments, and as someone who spent 25 years in the business, I want to address why this perception exists and how consumers can protect themselves from disappointing experiences.

Why Real Estate Agents Get a Bad Reputation

It is true that real estate agents do not always have the best public image. One major reason is the high turnover in the profession. Many people enter real estate believing they will quickly make a six-figure income, only to discover that it is a demanding, complex career. The reality often forces them to leave the business within a short period of time.

The job looks easy on television. Reality shows portray glamorous open houses, quick deals, and big commission checks. In truth, the work involves navigating people through one of the largest financial transactions of their lives. That requires skill, knowledge, negotiation ability, and the patience to handle unexpected challenges.

When buyers and sellers do not take time to interview agents, they may end up with someone who is new to the business and lacks the expertise to manage the process effectively. Unfortunately, that is when people start saying their agent was useless, only cared about their own commission, or came across as overly sales-focused.

The Risk of Choosing the First Agent You Meet

Many buyers find their agent through chance encounters. They may click the “Request a Showing” button on an online listing, and the person who shows up is simply the agent who paid for the lead. In most cases, that agent is not the one who listed the property and may be seeing it for the first time.

Sellers sometimes pick an agent because of a postcard they received or because they came across someone’s profile online that looked professional enough. These snap decisions increase the likelihood of working with someone who is not the right fit for your needs.

Why Due Diligence Matters

The key to avoiding a bad experience is to treat the selection of a real estate agent as you would any important hiring decision. Interview at least two or three agents. Ask about their experience, their knowledge of the local market, and how they plan to guide you through the process.

If the agent is newer to the business, find out who supports them. Do they have a broker or team leader they can turn to for guidance? Do they have resources that ensure they can get accurate information quickly? Even new agents can do a great job when they have strong mentorship and a solid network behind them.

Are Real Estate Agents Useless?

No, but some are not as effective as others. The difference comes down to experience, knowledge, and the ability to provide value beyond what you could accomplish on your own. The right agent will not only guide you through the process but will also anticipate issues before they arise, negotiate effectively on your behalf, and connect you with trusted professionals who can help with inspections, financing, and repairs.
